I reluctantly admitted that I was, in fact, aware of the symbolism.

Then I looked for a rock to go hide under. In the 1980s and 1990s, there was a saying recited by men that helped them decide which ear to pierce. “Left is right, right is wrong.” The meaning behind this phrase is that men who pierce their left ears are heterosexual, and men who pierce their right ears are homosexual.

The eye-opening revelation I had last week is that when people such as my former student see an earring in my left ear, they think I believe that a pierced right ear (and homosexuality) is wrong. The reason I wanted to find a rock to go hide under during my conversation with the young lady is that her mother, a good friend of mine, happens to be gay.

• I have many friends who are gay, and I have even officiated same-sex weddings for several of them—while wearing my left earring. Ugh.

• I was never the least bit racist, but for reasons that only sound like weak excuses now, I never felt bad about telling gay jokes or repeating homophobic slurs when I was a young man.

Over the years, my views on homosexuality have changed. Having had the pleasure of getting to know many gay and lesbian people, I now know that homosexuality is not a choice. I also know that gay people are just people. They have the same hopes, fears, and dreams that straight people have.

They deserve better from people like me who claim to be their allies. The day after talking to my former student, I removed my earring. Wearing only a left earring just doesn’t feel right anymore. I briefly considered going back to Claire’s to have my right ear pierced, but I would have to abstain from donating blood for twelve months if I were to get a new piercing.

The choice between getting a new piece of jewelry or saving lives is an easy one to make. To my gay and lesbian friends, I would like to apologize for my past insensitivity. I am grateful to have so many good friends, both gay and straight, who accept me for who I am, and I want you to know that I accept and love all of you, too.

Your Piercer will mark up a few different positions after consulting with you to help you decide the best option for your individual style and nose shape. We always take our time with marking the piercing placement, so you get all the possible options for your piercing.

If you prefer to wear a ring or hoop, your piercing may need to be lower or you may need to wear a larger ring in the future. If you are sure that you will always wear a nose stud and would prefer a higher piercing that is totally fine as well. Keep in mind that the higher the position, the harder it will be for you to change your jewellery on your own and convert to a ring.

You may need to position your nose piercing differently to accommodate space for a second piercing in the future as well. You can have a stacked or double nose piercing performed on the same day which means you will be able to get the positioning exactly right.

Remember, your face is not completely symmetrical. Lining up a double piercing for the nostrils takes care and planning. We have various ways to create the best possible piercing symmetry for you, including using measuring tools like callipers. One side of your nose may protrude more than the other. It is better to choose the thinnest part of your nostril where it dips in more.

This means there is less chance of swelling. However, if you have your heart set on piercing the side that is thicker or bulges out more, that is ok as well. We would recommend choosing a ring or hoop in this case as they allow more room for swelling. The positions of a nose piercing really depends on the type of jewellery you choose.

If your piercing is close to the front of your nose a ring or hoop can sit better. A stud or a ring can be worn midway on the nasal crease/ wing. A stud may look better than a ring if your piercing is further back or up high on the nasal crease or wing. If you change your mind after you get a nose piercing, don’t worry, nose piercings heal up fast after you take your jewellery out and you can always try another position or the opposite side in future.
