France star Kylian Mbappe is well on his way to becoming football’s biggest superstar. At the age of just 23, he’s already become one of the game’s best players, if not the best player on the planet right now. He’s pretty much already received the torch from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who have dominated the top of the game for well over a decade.
Yet even a global icon like Mbappe draws his inspiration from somewhere, and in his childhood years the PSG speedster was looking up to other players while developing his skills in the Monaco academy. His favorite player growing up was Cristiano Ronaldo, and that admiration remains today — even as Mbappe looks to pass the Portuguese icon as the biggest football star on the planet.

Was Ronaldo Mbappe’s Idol?

- He used to spend hours watching videos on the internet.” That sentiment has re-appeared over the years.

Just days after Portugal were knocked out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the hands of Cinderella story Morocco, Ronaldo posted on Instagram a lengthy statement thanking Portugal fans for their support in Qatar. The post didn’t state or suggest that Ronaldo would retire from international play, but it certainly had the sound of someone saying goodbye.
Mbappe commented on the post with a number of emojis, including the goat emoji which is often used as a reference to the term “Greatest of All Time,” or “GOAT” for short.

Is Mbappe better than Ronaldo at his age?
Comparing Mbappe’s record at the age of 24 to Messi & Ronaldo’s: goals, assists, trophies. PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe has only just turned 24 and it’s absolutely mindblowing to consider what he’s already achieved. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have defined an era, but it’s not unthinkable that Mbappe may one day surpass them.
- His goals and assists numbers are actually better than theirs were at the same age.
- The French striker burst onto the scene as a fresh-faced 17-year-old during Monaco’s 2016-17 campaign.
- He shone as they reached the Champions League semi-finals as they upset the odds to beat PSG to the Ligue 1 title.
- When he was just 18, in the summer of 2017, he moved to PSG from Monaco for €180million – a world-record fee for a teenager.
Now into his sixth season at the Parc des Princes, he’s close to surpassing Edinson Cavani as PSG’s all-time top scorer, having helped deliver four French titles, and a further seven domestic cups. It’s surely only a matter of time, but the Champions League still evades Mbappe, as does the Ballon d’Or.
As well as becoming a superstar for his club, Mbappe has also shone on the international stage. He scored in the World Cup final as France lifted the most prestigious prize in football at Russia 2018, and went on to add the Nations League in 2021. Les Bleus came agonisingly close to retaining their World Cup crown at Qatar 2022, but they finished runners-up to Argentina, despite Mbappe’s hat-trick in the final.
“Every year I wondered who would win the Ballon d’Or, Messi or Cristiano. Who do I prefer? It’s like choosing between your father or your mother, you can’t,” Mbappe said in the summer (via ). “The Ballon d’Or is inevitably associated with the battle between Leo and Cristiano.
Digging really deep into my memory. They have shared the prize for so long. Every year, like everyone else, I wondered which one of them would get it. Looking back, that battle was pretty crazy. “On ceremony days, it was fun to watch them when they were next to each other. And trying to figure out from their faces which one looked more angry or upset because they knew they didn’t win.” It will be interesting to consider where Mbappe goes from here.
Messi turned 24 in the summer of 2011. At that point he’d already won the Champions League three times and had pretty much sealed a third Ballon d’Or. It was at that stage in his career when his numbers went truly stratospheric, scoring a record 50 La Liga goals (73 in all competitions) as a 24-year-old in the 2011-12 season.
- Ronaldo, believe it or not, was still at Manchester United when he celebrated his 24th birthday.
- At that stage he’d won everything there was to win in England, as well as a first Champions League.
- When he turned 24 in February 2009, he was on his way to helping deliver a third straight Premier League title for United, but seemingly had his sights set on the Bernabeu – an £80million move was sealed in the summer, and he went on to lift a further four Champions Leagues at Real Madrid, becoming their all-time top goalscorer.
Here’s how Mbappe’s record, as of his 24th birthday, compares with Messi’s and Ronaldo’s at the same age.

Can Kylian Mbappe speak?
Does Mbappe Speak Other Languages? – Kylian Mbappe has always excelled at learning languages, as well as speaking fluent French, Spanish, and English, he has also been learning Portuguese and Italian. At the Globe Soccer Awards, Mbappe arrived on stage and introduced himself in Italian, which just shows how confident he is in not only assimilating other languages but actually putting them into practice too.
Why can Mbappe speak Spanish?
Cristiano Ronaldo fan – But where did Mbappé learn Spanish and how has he been able to master a second language? The answer to that might seem strange – in Monaco, Kylian, partly influenced by his love of Real Madrid and boyhood idol Cristiano Ronaldo, began taking Spanish classes when he was 15 years old during his time in Monaco.
There is even an old video on YouTube which shows a young a young Mbappé in front of a blackboard practicing phrases with his Spanish teacher, Kylian has made a continued effort to maintain his Spanish and ensure it doesn’t get rusty. From solidarity events (he spoke in Spanish via video-link to a 14-year-old fan battling cancer in New York) to nights on the town with latin music stars such as J Balvin and even conversations with Spanish-speaking team mates,
Last season, in an interview with Onda Cero, Pablo Sarabia revealed that he would regularly chat with Kylian in Cervantes’ language. “Kylian speaks Spanish really well, sometimes he replies to me in Spanish,”. Mbappé, unlike other French players such as Zidane and Benzema, who made history at Real Madrid but took a while to get to grips with the language, is getting closer to Chamartín with his language lessons already completed.
Why did Mbappe reject Al Hilal?
Why did Kylian Mbappe reject Al Hilal contract offer? – As per reports from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Mbappe has consistently declined to consider the offer from Saudi Arabia, with the 24-year-old also rumoured to have declined a meeting with Al Hilal officials in Paris last week.
- Despite complexity over the fees and contract details involved in a potential €300m offer, Mbappe’s reasoning for not accepting a switch to the Middle East appear to be mainly football focused.
- Any contract offer from Saudi Arabia will be a marked increase from his current salary at PSG, or any future deal at Real Madrid, due to the vast wealth on offer in the state-backed league.
- Mbappe’s decision to extend his contract in 2022, and turn his back on a move to Madrid was motivated by his claimed desire to win another major trophy in Paris, but he has never hidden his plan to move to Madrid in future.
- Despite the initial criticism from Real Madrid fans, the club remained openminded over bringing Mbappe in further down the line, due to his commitment to joining the Spanish superpower.
- Whilst Mbappe’s intention to join Madrid will not be 100% motivated by solely football factors, they do appear to be the determining factor, as Los Blancos continue to be a dominant force in the Champions League and as a global brand.
also report Mbappe is due to receive a loyalty bonus of £51.6m ($66.4m) if he is still a PSG player on August 1.

Jul 26, 2023, 08:14 PM ET Kylian Mbappé has refused to meet with representatives of Saudi Arabian team Al Hilal, who have made a world-record bid for the France striker, sources confirmed to ESPN. The Paris Saint-Germain player wouldn’t meet with Al Hilal officials, who were in the French capital to sign Brazilian forward Malcom,
Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.) The news was first reported by French sports daily L’Equipe. Al Hilal made a record €300 million ($332 million) bid for Mbappé on Monday but sources have told ESPN that the World Cup winner is not interested in joining the Riyadh-based club. Instead, he plans to walk away as a free agent at the end of the upcoming season, when he is widely expected to join Real Madrid,
Sources told ESPN that should Mbappé go to Real Madrid on a free transfer next summer, he would potentially get a €100m signing on fee. He would also get an €80m bonus this September should he opt to stay with PSG. PSG want to cash in on the World Cup star now rather than let him walk for free a year from now when his contract expires.
However, Mbappé’s PSG teammate Marco Verratti has now agreed to join Al Hilal, sources have told ESPN. While PSG and Al Hilal have yet to agree a transfer fee and remain some way apart in their valuations, the Italy international midfielder is expected to become the latest big name to move to Saudi Arabia.
Al Hilal missed out on Lionel Messi, who joined Inter Miami after two years at PSG. Information from ESPN’s Julien Laurens and the Associated Press was used in this report.
Why Mbappe chose PSG over Madrid?
Why Kylian Mbappe chose to stay at Paris Saint-Germain – ESPN play Nicol slams ‘absolute joke’ Mbappé-PSG saga in epic rant (2:23) Steve Nicol tears into the latest developments in Kylian Mbappé’s transfer saga, with the forward now set to extend his PSG deal. (2:23) On Saturday night at the Parc des Princes, Kylian Mbappé was in a good mood.
Not because his team, Paris Saint-Germain, were struggling to score without him against Lorient in their Ligue 1 opening game of the 2023-24 season. Not because one of his best friends in football, Ousmane Dembélé, was sat next to him in his box. No: most of all, Mbappé was happy because he knew that his punishment was finally over.
Since Aug.1, the 2018 World Cup winner was seemingly a football player in name only. Sure, he was training, but not in the way he has been used to through his career. PSG had decided to drop him from all first team activities because he wanted to run down his contract and leave as a free agent next season, which the club would not accept. So while PSG could muster only a scoreless draw, Mbappé was happy. Earlier on before the game, in the secrecy of the stadium, he met with club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, a conversation that turned out to be at once positive and constructive to the point that, after months of recriminations between player and club over whether he would leave the French capital, Mbappé was in talks to extend his contract.
Following the game, he was also reinstated to the PSG first-team squad. For weeks, the relationship between the two had been broken, talking to each other only through lawyers and letters. When PSG decided to entertain offers for Mbappé, the first one came from Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia’s Pro League. The €300m bid was accepted by Al Khelaifi, but Mbappé was not interested: he didn’t even pick up the phone to discuss.
All he wanted was to play, preferably in Spain for Real Madrid, and he already had an agreement with them to join on a free transfer next summer, with a massive €100m signing fee. But he was hoping for Real Madrid to push up the timeline and sign him now. Mbappé’s return to PSG training was swift once he and the owners resolved the necessary issues regarding his contract and future. Paris Saint-Germain Football/PSG via Getty Images As for staying at PSG? It seemed to be another dead end as the Qatari owners were ready to go far in this game of brinkmanship.
Unless he changed his mind, they were threatening to bench Mbappé all season like they did with Adrien Rabiot when he was in a similar position a few years ago. They even thought about banning Mbappé from coming to the stadium to watch the team play. But the superstar was determined, too. Every new thing PSG tried, he rejected.
A short contract extension? Not happening. A new, longer-term contract with a big signing-on fee? Still no. And yet, during this protracted contract crisis, two key things happened to create another big, unexpected twist. One of the reasons the Frenchman was not happy at the club for most of last season – remember back before the World Cup, we reported on him wanting to leave in January – was because he had been promised a competitive team around him and he didn’t think that was the case.
- To make him happy, PSG tried, unsuccessfully, to sign Dembélé from Barcelona last summer.
- Mbappé and Dembélé have always wanted to play club football together, and their brother-like relationship goes beyond football.
- They go on holidays together.
- They speak on the phone all the time.
- Attracting the French international winger to the Parc des Princes would be a positive step toward tempting Mbappé to stay without running down his contract.
So when PSG signed Dembélé on Aug.12, things started to change. The beautiful game lives here. Stream top leagues, tournaments and teams. FRIDAY, SEPT.15 (all times ET) • • SATURDAY, SEPT.16 (all times ET) • • • • • • • The other factor of the Mbappé U-turn, and maybe the most important one, was Neymar.
The Brazilian’s departure to Saudi Arabia was an absolute blessing, as Mbappé didn’t want Neymar at the club anymore. It was the case last summer, but PSG didn’t find anyone to take him. It was even more the case this summer. After being very close when they both arrived in Paris back in summer 2017, the two players had grown apart.
Mbappé could not bear the discipline issues with the Brazil international, nor the fact that he was usually missing half of the season every year, mostly through his many injuries (metatarsal, ankle, hamstring). They were also fighting for the same position.
- Mbappé wants to play off a striker on the left-hand side, yet Neymar has always played on the left-hand side.
- There was space for only one of them; PSG had to choose.
- In the discussion between Mbappé and Al Khelaifi on Saturday, the Frenchman promised not to leave as a free agent in 12 months’ time, which was the biggest stumbling block in all of this.
PSG were OK with the concept of seeing him leave, just not as a free agent. Now, he has committed himself to the club and vowed that PSG would get something when he leaves. So what will this compromise look like? It is still to be negotiated and agreed.
- It could be a short contract extension with a release clause.
- It could be an agreement in which the 24-year-old doesn’t renew his deal but does waive some of his bonuses to save PSG money (we are talking between €70-100m) before leaving at the expiration of his contract.
- In other words, there are options, but at least now, the two camps are friends again.
Mbappé is training and will play at Toulouse this weekend. Dembélé and him are inseparable, while Neymar has moved on. PSG even promised to try again for Manchester City playmaker Bernardo Silva, another signing that would strengthen the team and make Mbappé even happier.
