This is one reason airlines are able to sell tickets for pennies or across oceans for only a couple hundred dollars. The airlines are making big profits from ancillary fees and do everything possible to keep the actual airfare lower than the competition.

1. As consumers of air travel, we need to be careful to only pay for what we want and not get fooled into paying more than we intend.
2. In my opinion, the seat fee is one of the easiest airline fees to avoid.
3. It can be confusing when going through the booking steps and you may not even realize an extra seat fee was added by the time you get to the final payment screen.

Even if an airline’s website makes it appear that you have to pay extra for a seat, you are never required to choose a specific seat and can always opt to decline seat selection in lieu of a FREE seat assignment during check-in.

Do you have to select a seat when booking a flight?

Skip seat selection altogether – Though it might sound scary, there’s one weird trick airlines don’t want you to know: You don’t have to select a seat. Dawn Gilbertson: A consultant I talked to called these seat fees an economic gift to airlines because it requires literally no investment. They’re just monetizing the seat map.J.R. Whalen: So how high can these fees run? We’ll ask Wall Street Journal travel columnist Dawn Gilbertson about that, as well as how passengers can avoid seat fees.

That’s after the break. The price of an airline ticket has gone up with pretty much everything else, but for many air passengers these days, there’s a little extra shock in that sticker shock. Airlines charging fees that sometimes exceed $100 just to pick out a seat.

So why are airlines doing this and how can passengers avoid paying? Wall Street Journal travel columnist Dawn Gilbertson is making her Your Money Briefing debut and is here to break down the numbers for us. Hey Dawn, welcome to the show. Thank you so much for being with us. Dawn Gilbertson: Thanks for having me.J.R.

Whalen: So Dawn, what’s a typical fee for reserving seats? Dawn Gilbertson: Well, the unfortunate thing is there is no typical fee. I mean, airlines have some price ranges on their websites, but what I found is a lot of times those even aren’t realistic because these prices are dynamic.

I interviewed a passenger who paid $27 for an aisle seat, and I found fees as high as $100. As an example, I priced a flight from Atlanta to LAX in mid-July on Delta airlines, and seat 15D, which is an ordinary aisle seat, the price tag that popped up was $104.99 each way.J.R. Whalen: Wow. So what are the passengers getting in return? Dawn Gilbertson: Well, there’s different categories of seats.

My column focuses on what the airlines love to call preferred seats, and I think there’s absolutely nothing preferred about them, except that they’re generally near the front of the plane. Airlines argue that people like to get off the plane quicker. There’s no extra leg room, no free drinks, no early boarding.

1. You are simply getting a seat that the airline deems is a preferred seat that some people might want to pay more for.
2. This is not just true for seats in the economy cabin.
3. There are examples of international flights in business class that charge seats.
4. For example, British Airways, I priced a $6,000 round trip ticket and they still wanted a minimum of $122 to pick my business class seat, one way.J.R.

Whalen: Why are the airlines doing this, charging this particular fee. Dawn Gilbertson: One word, money. And a consultant I talked to called these seat fees an economic gift to airlines because it requires literally no investment. They’re just monetizing the seat map.J.R.

Airlines generally know travelers belong to one party only if all the passengers are on the same reservation record. Airlines assigning or reassigning seats give priority to parents and children on the same reservation.

Is it mandatory to select seat in web check-in?

Budget airline IndiGo on Monday clarified that passengers will not have to compulsorily pay for their seats during web check-in. The airline’s clarification came after the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation said that it was reviewing airlines’ policies of charging customers for all seats during web check-in.

• On Sunday, IndiGo and SpiceJet said that they will charge money for online check-in services but will continue to allocate seats for free for airports check-ins.
• IndiGo had said that the new policy has been in place since November 14 and that it was a “usual practice followed by airlines globally and across India”.

O n Monday, however, IndiGo said it had not changed its web check-in practices. “This is to further clarify that IndiGo customers will not compulsorily have to pay for the seats,” IndiGo said in a statement, according to Mint, “The pricing is only for advance selection of seats.

1. When the customer checks-in at the airport, the seats would be assigned for free.” The “advance seat selection” process during web check-in is meant for passengers who would prefer seats extra leg-room or would like to be seated together on a flight.

The airline said that if the passengers do not have any particular preference for seats and would not like to pay for advance seat selection, they can either choose free seats available at the time of web check-in or will be assigned seats during check-in at airports, reported The Indian Express,

The airline also said that the pricing for advance selection of seats is dynamic and may vary based on the type of aircraft, duration of the flight, occupancy and time left before departure. The airline’s decision to charge passengers for all seats during web check-ins had led to angry reactions on social media.

How many seats does Wizz Air plane have?

Wizz Air, the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe*, today announces that from May 2015 the airline will introduce allocated seating to enhance customers’ travel experience and satisfaction. On selected routes from 4 May 2015 and across all WIZZ routes from 19 May 2015, customers will enjoy automatic free allocated seating, which will become part of the booking process from 8 April.

Wizz Air will allocate neighboring seats to passengers traveling together on the same booking where possible. Customers can change their free seat allocation and choose a different seat for a fee, starting from €1 on wizzair.com or on WIZZ mobile applications any time up until 3 hours prior to flight departure.

Preferred seats, such as front row seats for quick disembarking or seats with extra legroom, can be reserved for a higher fee upon availability on a first come first served basis. Wizz Air’s allocated seating will be piloted on selected routes (Budapest-Barcelona, Katowice-London, Bucharest – Dortmund) from 4 May and subsequently rolled out on all of Wizz Air’s 360 routes from 110 airports across 37 countries from 19 May.

1. Customers with seats booked prior to 8 April for flights with allocated seating will be assigned a seat at the time of check-in, while passengers with existing bookings including WIZZ Xtra legroom and WIZZ Reserved Seat services will be able to select their seats of choice at no additional cost.
2. Passengers with WIZZ Premium and WIZZ Privilege Pass memberships will be able to select any seat for free and also continue to enjoy Priority Boarding to avoid queues.

From 8 April Wizz Air also lowers the Priority Boarding fee to just €2. ONLINE FEES APPLICABLE WHEN PASSENGERS WISH TO CHANGE THEIR FREE SEAT ALLOCATION

Fees vary according demand. György Abrán, Chief Commercial Officer at Wizz Air said: “I am delighted to share today this major improvement for our customers that comes as part of our constant development of better services and processes. Consumer satisfaction was at the core of our mission when we launched the airline over 10 years ago and continues to steer our actions every day.

1. I am convinced that airlines’ trend to re-introduce seat allocation accurately reflects what consumers now value most when travelling: an affordable airfare and a comfortable and hassle-free experience.
2. We have 180 seats on each of our 55 A320 aircraft and from November we will have 230 seats on our new A321 aircraft.

Our new seat allocation comes as part of a number of planned experience upgrades in 2015 which we will announce very soon.”

Do Wizz Air seats recline?

In Flight Experience – Most recently we flew from Bratislava to Lviv (Fight 6736) on an Airbus A320. The seats weren’t spacious but I didn’t feel cramped like I have when flying with Easyjet or Sky Airlines. The leather seats were slightly worn but comfortable enough.

Seats on Wizz Air don’t recline, so reclining etiquette doesn’t come into play. The seat configuration is 3 x 3 (A – F) which is no different to any other budget airline. One thing I noticed was that fewer people brought carry on bags to stow on board than our most recent flight on Ryanair. I don’t know whether this can be attributed to the route.

Our Ryanair flight was from Paris, so maybe people cart home shopping. It was a welcome surprise, nevertheless.

Where is my seat on a plane online?

SeatGuru shows you airplane seat maps online so you can find out whether your airplane seat is over a wing or next to the toilets.

1. Basically, it’s a site that gives advice on which plane seats people should try to get or avoid,
2. SeatLink is better if you don’t know your aircraft types, you can just list your city, airline, and dates and it will bring up the flights and equipment for that day.
3. You can also search by flight number (SeatGuru does this too but SeatLink’s is sleeker).

If you dislike your seat assignment after checking your placement with one of the websites, change your seat by logging in to the airline’s website. Keep in mind that you’ll likely have to pay to move to more desirable seats, such as the ones with extra legroom.
